Description

Instant Pot Dum Biryani is one of the tastiest, most flavorful and easiest one-pot meals you can make. It’s a classic Indian dish made with basmati rice, spices, vegetables and/or meat. This Instant Pot version is so much easier to make than the traditional method, and it comes out perfectly cooked and super flavorful every time. It’s a great dish for weeknight meals, family dinners or potluck parties.

Prep Time

This recipe takes about 10 minutes to prepare, and then the Instant Pot does the rest of the work. So, from start to finish, you can be enjoying a delicious meal in about 45 minutes.

Cook Time

The Instant Pot will do all the work for you. The cook time is about 25 minutes, but that doesn’t include the time it takes for the pot to come to pressure, which can take 10-15 minutes. So, total cook time is 35-40 minutes.

Ingredients

- 2 cups basmati rice, rinsed and soaked in water for 30 minutes

- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter) or oil

- 2 onions, chopped

- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste

- 1 teaspoon salt

- 2 tomatoes, chopped

- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

- 1 teaspoon garam masala

- 1 tablespoon chili powder

- 2 cups diced vegetables (such as carrots, peas, potatoes, bell peppers)

- 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

- 2 tablespoons lemon juice

- 1/2 cup yogurt

- 2 cups water

- 1 pound boneless chicken, beef or lamb, cut into cubes

Instructions

1. Turn the Instant Pot to sauté mode. Add the ghee or oil and heat. Add the onions and sauté until golden brown. Add the ginger-garlic paste, salt, tomatoes, cumin seeds, garam masala, chili powder and diced vegetables and sauté for another few minutes until the vegetables are lightly cooked.

2. Add the cilantro, lemon juice, yogurt, water, and the chicken, beef or lamb. Stir to combine.

3. Add the rinsed and soaked basmati rice and stir to combine.

4. Close the Instant Pot lid and turn the steam release handle to the “sealing” position. Set the Instant Pot to “Manual” mode and set the timer to 10 minutes.

5. When the timer is done, let the Instant Pot naturally release the pressure for 10 minutes. Then carefully open the lid, fluff the biryani with a fork and serve.
